Madhubala an Indian classic actress who appeared in classic films of Indian cinema. She is regarded as one of the influential personalities in Indian cinema.
Madhubala was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, on 14 February 1933 to parents of Afghan origin, Ataullah Khan & Begum Ayeesha, and was fifth of the eleven children. Madhubala’s orthodox middle class family lived in Delhi. After her father lost his job they relocated to Mumbai. There the family endured in many hardships.
This hardships led her to & her family to make frequent visits to Bombay film studios to look for work. At the age of 9 she was introduced to the film industry to provide financial help to the family. She started working as the child artist.
Madhubala’s first break was Basant (1942) in which she acted as the daughter to a mother played by actress Mumtaz Shanti. She acted as a child artist in many films. By seeing her performance actress Devika Rani advised her to keep the screen name as Madhubala. Her first lead was at the age of 14 & was opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel-Kamal.
She achieved stardom & popularity in 1949when she was casted as lead in Mahal after that she appeared in many other hits such as Dulari, Bequsoor, Tarana etc. before appearing in the Magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam.which made her the most versatile & prolific actress.
As her professional life was very well but her personal life was not very great. She was over protected by her father & was very obedient which one of the prime reason for the downfall in her personal life. After a prolonged illness this versatile & great actress left the world in tears in 1969.
