10 Amazing ‘Rat Catcher’s Day 2014’ Facts That Will Blow Your Mind

Rat Catcher’s Day / Ratcatcher’s Day / Rat-catcher’s Day is celebrated on 22^nd July 2014. It commemorates the myth of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

1. One of the most famous German folklores is the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
2. Hamelin is the town of Germany which was infested by rats.
3. Pied Piper was promised by the mayor that he would be paid handsomely if he rid the town of rats.
4. Pied Piper played his magical flute and all the rats of the town followed him.
5. He played the music all his way down to the river and the rats followed him and drowned.
6. The mayor refused to pay and broke the promise.
7. On one night, Pied Piper played his magical music again and this time all the children of the town followed him into a cave.
8. There were 2 versions of the story – in 1 version, Pied Piper kept the children with him until he was paid and in the 2^nd version, the children were never to be seen again.
9. July 22 is considered to be the Ratcatcher’s day as it is believed that Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin of rats on 22 July 1284.
10. This day is celebrated annually to say “Thank You” to all present day exterminators.
