Interview with Sonia Christina Monteiro, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper 2013-14, Nirmala Memorial Foundation College Of Commerce & Science who scored 73.29% and GPA score is 6.86
How does it feel to be a Topper in the university exams? Whom will you credit your success to? What was your success mantra?
The feeling is definitely exquisite, something I hadn’t experience ever. My firsthand credit definitely goes to my faculties at college and private classes and also to my mother for the endless support. Not so much of a mantra but all I did was work and offered my studies to god and he helped me unconditionally, for which am forever thankful.
Did you prepare any timetable and please share your study strategy/exam tips to crack each subject of sem 5?
There was hardly anytime at hand but the time that was at hand I used 2-3hours of my day doing Financial Management and Special Studies in Finance every day and theory subjects on alternate days.
Do you think BMS student require coaching classes or is self-study enough? Had you joined any coaching class for a particular subject?
I wouldn’t say it’s a must but most definitely for subjects like Financial Management and Special Studies in Finance it was required and yes, I did join coaching classes for these subjects as well as Logistics.
What was your specialization subject? Why did you opt for it?
My specialization subject was Finance. I love Finance, I think it’s interesting and challenging and creates a sense of challenge and therefore I opted for Special Studies in Finance.
Can you list the textbooks you referred for all subjects?
For all my subjects I referred to both Rishab Publications and Vipul publications, as answers we simplified for our understanding of the subjects. It made it is easier and much less complex to retain the courses.
Which was your worst paper? Why? Which was your best paper? Why?
Not worst, but yes the difficultly level of Financial Management was not satisfactory. As for the easiest, I think Special studies in finance and Service sector management were relatively easier.
Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
Yes, its really sad that students sometimes can’t cope with the studies or the added stress created my society relating to always being “Number 1” or “The best”. Not everyone has fast a functioning brain, myself for instance, I really need to keep revising and re-reading things to actually get it well set in my mind. And also sometimes parents can add the pressure with the common cliché of “your friends got better marks so then why couldn’t you”, well that’s just so deeming and wrong. As for myself, I found my refuge in constant prays and also I’m blessed to having a loving and supporting mother and friends who ever always there for me.
The Black Book project contributing a significant part to the percentage, please share the experiences you had during the preparation of the project and how has it benefited you.
Doing the project was challenging, yet absolutely fun and interesting. I made a project on “Corporate Finance”, comparing the financials of two logistics companies and studying their working capital management. But I feel the parameters of correction were unfair as I didn’t achieve the marks I expected, for the time and effort put in.
Did you pursue any additional courses/ internships alongside BMS? What are your future plans?
BMS as a course itself is very time consuming, but as time didn’t permit I really couldn’t pursue any additional courses/internships alongside. As for future plans I wish to pursue further studies in finance.
Any tips and advises for your juniors?
Work hard, do your best and don’t leave anything in options. Use various techniques to manage your stress and failures – Prayers, music, friends, etc. whatever suits you the best. And also don’t worry much about the results, as long as you have done your best, just offer everything else to god and believe that he will do nothing less than what’s best for you, even if it means failure because only he knows the purpose behind it.
