An amazing fact about Indian culture is food. Indian cuisine has a variety of food items. Every state has its own food culture. The basic spices may be the same but the food items and habits differ and this gives a huge variety of delicacies. Maharashtrian food comes from the state of Maharashtra as the name suggests and is the food of Marathi people. Maharastrian food has a variety of savories and is a perfect blend of sweet, spice, sour, etc. Wheat, rice, jowarbajri, vegetables, lentils and fruit form staples of Maharashtrian diet. Some of the popular dishes include puran poliukdiche Modak, and batata wada.

Pohe – Pohe is a snack made from flattened rice. It is most likely served with tea or as a breakfast dish and is probably the most likely dish that a Maharashtrian will offer his guest any time of the day. The dish is garnished with different things like fresh coriander, grated coconut, crushed peanuts or Shev. The crisp taste of onion and dash of lemon makes this a mouth watering delicacy.  images (3)

Misal Pav – Misal is water based curry preparation of cooked sprouted lentils topped with batata-bhaji, pohae, Chivda, farsaan, raw chopped onions and tomato. It is sometimes eaten with yogurt to cut the spice and is always served with bread called Pav and lemon wedges. It’s a spicy delicacy.

Wada / Vada Pav – The Wada-Pav is a fast-food snack. It consists of a spicy, deep fried potato based patty sandwiched between a pav. This dish is usually served with chutney and fried salted green chilies.In Mumbai there are numerous wada-pav stalls and no matter where you may be in the city, you can always find one just around the corner.

Rassa (Taambda/ Pandhra/) – The non-vegetarian Maharashtrian dishes include mutton, usually of sheep, lamb or goat, chicken, fish and other seafoods. Rassa is a popular type of curry prepared in Maharashtra. It originates from Kolhapur. There is also fish curry which is a cocnut based curry and originates from Goa.

Puran Poli – Puran Poli is one of the most popular sweet item in the Maharashtrian cuisine. It is eaten after meals or as a snack and is present in almost all Maharashtrian festive occasions.

There are plenty of restaurants across the city catering mahrashtrian food. There is ‘Diva Maharashtacha’in Matunga and Andheri West, ‘Purepur Kolhapur’ in Vile Parle East, ‘Gajalee’ and ‘Mahesh Lunch Home’ for sea food lovers, ‘The Coast’ in Bandra West and many more.
