So the world cup is on and the group stages have been interesting as expected and there have been some of the biggest upsets of this world cup. The biggest of the shocker has to be elimination of the defending champions, this year’s favorites, SPAIN. At the start of the World Cup the people talked about the best teams to win it and Spain was a contender alongside hosts Brazil and probably Germany. Then came the first matches of group stages and Spain had to play a team that they had defeated in last world cup finals, the Netherlands. It was a team waiting for a revenge and how about this beating Spain 5 goals to 1. It was a shocker; no one would have expected such a disastrous score-line for Spain. The players were completely dismantled by the mighty Dutch. Spanish defense was unable to handle the fast and rash attack of Netherlands containing world’s elite players like Robben, Van Persie and old Sneijder.
Then came a fixture in the tough group of Spain and they were against Chile, a team having world class players like Vidal, Sanchez, Isla, a team with hard workers who would never stop running and it was always going to be difficult for Spain’s tiki-taka to be comfortable against this team who had beaten Australia in their first fixture. Chile defeated Spain 2-0 and destroyed Spain’s hope of winning the world cup. It was all over the news and it shown that Spain may not really be the team they are regarded as. The champions were destroyed and now they have a game remaining against Australia but even a win will not feel them any good.
This has been 4th time ever that the champions were out in the group stages in next world cup. It happened to Italy in the last world cup and to Spain now. It’s time for their manager, staff and players to look for something to get them back with this humiliation and with the quality players they have they will surely never stop winning trophies, only time will tell.
