Monsoon visits India like a new season, as rainy July kick starts; there was a new visitor in India this week. Many of the people who know only Mark Zuckerberg as the man behind Facebook also need to know the women power behind the giant social networking site. Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook visited India this week. She is also the ninth of Forbes’ most powerful women in the world.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, she discussed the importance of India for Facebook as well as the role of women in the technology sector. She told that CNBC that she has noticed changes in the country over the last few decades and this makes her confident and bullish about India.
Sheryl said, that when she used to come in the early 1990s there was no internet connection, but today as per her experience at Google and now in Facebook; India is not only a place that is growing its own economy but Facebook has one of the four global centres of operations here in India. Using the talent of India is not only used to grow business here in India, but also around the world.
She was also asked that why the tech industry a male dominated space? Her view on this was the specific problem of small percentage of women going into computer science. Turning towards the positive side of this problem, she gave example of the two leading ladies working for the firm here in India; Ankhi Das and Kirthiga Reddy who head public policy and global sales respectively.
During the course of her India visit, Sandberg also spoke about the importance of India for Facebook. She said, “India is Facebook’s second largest market, fastest growing market, and fastest growing internet connectivity in APAC. It is of high priority for us.” Sheryl was interviewed by CNBC-TV18’s Executive Editor Sheeran Bhan.
