On this occasion, a huge turn out of devotees witnessed at the Durga Puja pandals and temples across the country.
Thousands of devotees thronged Durga Puja pandals across the city Friday to participate in the ‘anjali’ or special prayers amid the beats of the traditional dhak drums on Mahashtami – the third and most important day of the puja.
Durga Puja, the five-day autumn festival that begins with Shashti and ends with Dussehra, is being held with great fervour at colossal marquees, where idols of the goddess and her four children are installed and worshipped.
Durga Puja দুর্গা পূজা [d̪urɡa pudʒa i.e. worshipping of Lord Durga is also known as “Durgotsava” or “Festival of Durga” or “Sharadotsav” or “Maha Navami”. Below are the dates of Durga Puja and Dusshera or Vijayadashami in 2014:

- Durga Puja begins (Maha Saptami): Wednesday, 01-10-2014
- Maha Ashtami: Thursday, 02-10-2014

- Navaratri ends: Friday, 03-10-2014
- Vijaya Dashami/Dussehra: Friday, 03-10-2014
