Name- Neelam Shetty

College- Xaviers College

Tell us something about yourself

I have done my post graduation in Business Management from SIES College of Management Studies with a dual specialization in HR and Marketing. Have worked with ICICI Prudential and Ayushakti Ayurved Pvt. Ltd. Before taking up teaching, I was appointed as the co-ordinator in 2007.

Tell us something about your college

The Bachelor of Management Studies Department at St. Xavier’s College aims to provide opportunities for all-round student development. Lot of emphasis is placed on practical exposure in order to enable them to successfully face challenges posed by the corporate world. We are committed to develop our students into socially responsible citizens.

When did you join this profession? What inspired you to choose this line?

I joined this profession in 2004. I was inspired to choose this field since many of my family members are also from the teaching field. Also this profession helps me in striking a perfect balance between my personal and professional life.

As a Coordinator, do you also teach any subjects? If yes, which subjects you teach and

Which you love the most?

Yes, I do teach subjects such as Principles Of Management (POM), Organizational Behaviour (OB), Entrepreneurship & Human Resource Management (HRM). I love to teach Organizational Behaviour (OB) the most.

How are the roles and responsibilities of a Coordinator different from that of a

faculty? Do you like being a Faculty or a Coordinator? Which helps you to connect more with students?

The roles and responsibilities of a Co-ordinator are different from that of a Faculty as I have to co-ordinate with the students as well as the full time and visiting faculties.

I like being a Coordinator as it gives me an opportunity to keep in touch with teaching as well as administration. This helps me not miss the corporate experience.

Who in your life has influenced the most?

My father because he is very organized, clear in his thinking & well planned.

What should BMS/Management education mean to a student? –

BMS as a course not only teaches general management as a whole but also teaches various subjects which you can personally relate to. For example: Organizational behaviour (OB) subject teaches you a lot about how to behave in your personal and professional life. In this subject, we not only learn how to manage people but also ourselves. It helps in understanding people & their behaviour.

Tell us something about your college fests/events and extra-curricular activities?

The students of St. Xavier’s believe in seizing every opportunity and translating it into something colossal. Hence, the budding managers of Bachelor of Management Studies, St. Xavier’s College organised “Pandemonium -Organized Chaos” an exclusive management festival. When several budding minds come together, riot is bound to ensue. Also we have an annual BMS magazine, ‘The Management Dossier’ which witnessed a radical change in 2010, as a novel idea was conceptualized so that we could transform our Dossier into a memento for every eco friendly Xavierite. So, the Management Dossier 2010 was presented on a CD ROM. Also we have a SIP centre (Social Involvement Programme) where each student needs to dedicate 90-95 hours towards volunteering either as a writer for visually challenged student or by taking up any other projects.

Do you believe that it should be made compulsory for students to manage both

Studies and be a part of college fests/events?

Yes, we have made it compulsory under the credit system for the students to participate in college fests/events. They have to either volunteer or participate for at least 60 hours in 3 years during the course.

Tell us something about your college students’ performances?

The performance of our students is excellent. We also have placements from Mc Kinsey, Citi Bank etc. Also the students who have been placed in corporate are doing really well.

What are your future plans for the college?

As Xaviers is an autonomous institute, we aim to continuously upgrade ourselves to cater to the needs of our students. Autonomy is big a step in this direction.

As a person, what is your mission/aim in life?

As a person, I will be very happy if I can make a difference in the life of   my students by way of teaching. My aim is to guide them to achieve what they want in life.

Does your college provide any placement assistance to BMS students?

Yes, our college does provide placement assistance for students. We do have campus recruitment.

What message would you like to give to BMS students?

Now-a-days I feel that students are much disoriented as they don’t understand which field to choose. They skip from 1 language to another. They don’t understand the connectivity of subjects. They need to understand that BMS as a course focuses on general management & does not focuses on specialization of any subject. BMS as a course is really good for entrepreneurship.
