Tell us something about yourself

I’m an MBA (Marketing & Finance) & have completed my Ph.D from the University of Pune on “Venture Capital Management- Indian Experience”. I have a teaching experience of nine years at the Under- Graduate & Post-Graduate level. I’m a Certified Entrepreneurship Educator by Stanford University, USA and the National Entrepreneurship Network. I’m also trained in tools for successful Business Incubation supported by Dept. Of Science & Technology, NSTEDB. Apart from this I’ve also conducted workshops at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies & Research, D.Y. Patil. I’ve also been a participant at various workshops & courses held at S.P. Jain, IIT Bombay, Welingkars and IIM-B. I’ve also been a judge for Business plan competition of IIT-Kanpur and apart from these I’m also involved in mentoring activities.

Tell us something about your college

As a programme, BMS started by University of Mumbai in 1999. Jai Hind College was one of the first colleges in Mumbai to have started it and from that moment, it is constantly at the forefront in the sphere of BMS. The department of Management Studies, which conducted the BMS Programme was then headed by Prof. Meena Saxena, who, in a short span of time, made it one of the most sought after programmes offered by Jai Hind College. Currently, I’m the Coordinator of the Programme and Mr. Omkar Patki is the Assistant CoordinaWhen did you join this profession?

What inspired you to choose this field? –

I joined the teaching profession in 2001 & I’m the BMS coordinator of Jai Hind since 2006. My mother inspired me to choose this field.

As a Coordinator, do you also teach any subjects? If yes, which subjects you teach.

Yes, I do teach various subjects such as Principles Of Management, Business Environment, Strategic Management, Co-operatives & Rural Market, Research & Methodology, Entrepreneurship & Business Ethics.

How are the roles and responsibilities of a Coordinator different from that of a

faculty? Do you like being a Faculty or a Coordinator? Which helps you to connect more with students?

Apart from teaching, we are always available for student’s personal growth at times when students require certain mentoring to be done, we are also there to monitor growth at all levels, regular check on attendance, arranging for various seminars, workshops. Helping & mentoring them for the event ‘Talaash’. We also have regular Parents-teachers meetings. The advantage of being a coordinator is that I’m close to the students & parents. Being a coordinator helps me to connect more with students.

Who in your life has influenced the most?

My family has influenced me the most.

What should BMS/Management education mean to a student?

As an undergraduate Management programme, BMS is looked up to by the students as a repertory for MBA, BMS’ curriculum was very contemporary and its emphasis on practical aspects of Management along with theory was well appreciated. BMS in Jai Hind we identify the requirements of the students, we categorize students into various categories- 1) Students who want placements gets placements, 2) Students who want to be an entrepreneur can join the various entrepreneurship programmes , & 3) Students who want to pursue their post-graduation immediately so we have specific set of seminars & we have education councillors who guide them. Jai Hind tries to suffice student’s needs accordingly.

Tell us something about your college fests/events and extra-curricular activities?

Talaash is by far the biggest inter-collegiate festival for the unaided courses, organised by Jai Hind College. Organised by the B.M.S. students, its success just gets bigger and better every year. Over the years, Talaash has come a long way. The key to the huge success of Talaash lies in the large scale participation, not only from institutes in Mumbai but from beyond the circles of this cosmopolitan city. Students from cities like Pune, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai are ever-enthused to participate in Talaash every year. The events are held at larger than life and at regal venues like the NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts), The Bombay Presidency Radio Club, The World Trade Centre, Hotel Leela Kempinski to name a few. The events under the ambit of Talaash are admirably eclectic and coupled with unprecedented fun, frolic and a platform to truly showcase as well as hone one’s abilities. The academic events always have a management flavour to them, encouraging participants to work using their grey cells to achieve their goals and targets. However, being management students, they cannot afford to be inclined and associated with limited avenues where only analytical and reasoning skills are required. They need to be familiar with a gamut of avenues and therefore Talaash includes the Sports Day as well as the Cultural Day which hosts various theme based Dances, Fashion Shows, Dramas, the War of The DJs and Band Nites, thus encouraging the students to experience life as an “Explorer”. December truly is known as the month of festivities and rightly so and Talaash unarguably is the Flavour Of The Month. Your quest for the best ends at one of the biggest management festivals -Talaash.

Do you believe that it should be made compulsory for students to manage both

studies and be a part of college fests/events?

Yes, I believe that it should be made compulsory for students to manage both

studies and be a part of college fests. I believe that they should strike a perfect balance between academics and their participation in college fests/ events because that will help them gain experiential learning & groomed leaders. Our BMS’s USP is ‘Experiential Learning’.

Tell us something about your college students’ performances?

On the academic performance front, the students of BMS have made the College proud. From the year 2004-05 till date, Jai Hind BMS students have been securing Ranks in the University examinations. In 2010-11, more than 80% of students got distinction & three University Ranks.

Does your college provide any placement assistance to BMS students?

Yes, in fact we have a full fledged placement cell managed by our students & faculties. We have 100% placements.

What are the prospects after BMS?

It depends on students as in what they want to do. We have everything available at Jai Hind- if they want to be an entrepreneur they can take up different courses on entrepreneurship. If they want to go for post-graduation they can go for MBA.

What message would you like to give to BMS students?

I would like to say that focus more on research that will help them to have more of experiential learning, basically they should do primary research.

A professional in the education industry, Ojas is currently working with S P Jain School of Global Management (the global arm of S P Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai) as Program Manager for all the under-graduate as well as post-graduate programs whereby he plays a significant role in planning the schedules of the programs across global campuses located in Dubai, Singapore and Sydney. He gained hands-on experience in the field of Social Media and E-Commerce, then. He started his career in teaching at Aadeshwar Academy, Borivali where he trained the school-level students in the French language. He was also associated with Dnyana Prakash Classes, Dadar for two academic years where taught subjects of Organisation of Commerce and Management to Class-12 students. Academically, he's a graduate in management studies in distinction class with a strong flair towards languages. He is pursuing his Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Masters in Commerce with Business Management elective. He has completed his A-1 level certification in French Language from L' Alliance Francaise de Bombay. Also, he is a Certified Professional Introductory Counselor from SIES Institute of Comprehensive Education and holds a certification in Capital Markets from Inter-connected Stock Exchange of India Ltd.
