Meaning of Degeneracy and Infeasibility in LPP.(Apr 2002)
Degeneracy: Degeneracy occurs in two cases.
1] When one or more of basic variables has ZERO value. Quantity value for a Basic variable is equal to zero in the simplex table.
2] There is a tie in replacement ratios for two rows (Basic variables). Hence, for one incoming variable, there are two outgoing variables.
Infeasibility: The solution is called feasible if it satisfies all the constraints and non-negativity. The solution is infeasible. The constraints are of contradictory nature. Hence, it is not possible to find the feasible region of solution in graphical method.
In simplex method infeasibility can be detected when one or more artificial variables have positive value & the simplex algorithm has ended.
