An Interview with Purva Nayak, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper, SIES College, Sion East (83%)
- Being a topper from the past 2 years, how do you feel to be the College Topper again of Sem 5 Exams?
How many ever times one tops the college or receives a good score, the intense feeling of uncertainty and anxiety at the time of results is always there. Infact I would say that no doubt such successes adds a feather to one’s cap, but it also adds to the feeling of pressure and the constant need to stand up to people’s expectations.
Moreover, this time it weren’t our own college professors who were judging us and correcting our papers but the Mumbai University paper correctors and moderators- considered “a fearful entity” in themselves by us poor college students who are at their mercy..!! 😛
Hence, I would be lying if I said that I was not highly elated, (& definitely pretty surprised too) to know that I had topped this semester as well. Also, my feeling of joy is doubled due to the fact that I managed to achieve this without the help of any classes or tutorials, and just due to sheer hard work..!!
- What’s the secret of your success? How do you manage to always attain marks above 80%?
“What is success? I think it is a mixture of having a flair for the thing that you are doing; knowing that it is not enough, that you have got to have hard work and a certain sense of purpose…! ” – Margaret Thatcher
Success, according to me, may it be at any stage of life, comprises of following your dreams and passion and excelling at whatever you do. With respect to success in a student’s life, I wouldn’t say that success is just passing your exams with flying colours, but learning and absorbing whatever available knowledge at every stage and developing yourself into an all round individual, who’s sufficiently equipped to face the world and all its trials.
With respect to myself, I attribute my repeated success to plain hard work and thoroughness in whatever I’m doing. I believe that Qualitative learning is way more important than Quantitative learning. Studying with various distractions surrounding you is pointless. Few hours of dedicated and concentrated studying every day, proved to be fruitful.
It’s very easy to achieve your desired goal by making constant determined efforts towards it….!!
- Share your study methodology and tips to crack every subject?
Frankly speaking, there wasn’t any particular study methodology that I followed as such. Regular diligent studying from the start itself balanced with regularly attending lectures in college is a sure shot method of securing a good score. Joining various classes and tutorials isn’t a necessity, even for your Final Year, as felt by many.
Assigning equal time to each subject is a must. According to me, charting timetables is a complete waste of time (I never have managed to follow a single timetable I’ve made till date…!!) Subjects such as Special Studies in Finance and Financial Management just required constant solving, such subjects definitely shouldn’t be left to the last minute as they are extremely scoring.
Very sincere thanks to my extremely able professors who were always there to clarify and solve all my doubts, without whom I surely wouldn’t have been able to achieve such a score. Also a special thanks to www.bms.co.in for providing us with a list of important probable questions before every University exam, and also tips and guidelines to be followed for every subject.
- What are the challenges in a BMS student’s life and how do you overcome them?
A student pursuing Management Studies should be capable enough to face any and every challenge thrown at him in this intensely and aggressively competitive market. Posts are few and candidates are many. Hence, there should be a constant strive towards being one of the best, If not The Best..!!!
A BMS student faces many challenges, firstly his academics, consisting of umpteen presentations, assignments, submissions, internal exams, vivas, projects, field visits along with side by side preparing for your external exams which are the most important…!! According to me, last minute efforts do not pay at all, contrary to what people normally believe.
Time management, setting realistic goals, and working towards fulfilling them can overcome any challenge.
- What is your aim in life?
My immediate aim would be to get a good score in my Sixth Semester exams as well, following which I’ll try to secure admission in a good management institute to pursue an MBA in Finance, Banking or Investment Analysis. After this, I hope to acquire a suitable position in a reputed bank or investment firm and climb the corporate ladder.
I don’t always plan long term as we can never be too sure of the future, but I’m positive about my short term goals and I purposefully strive towards attaining them….!!
