A graduate of the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Patrick D’souza is one of those serial exam takers who feverishly sits for competitive tests just to get a hang of the changing patterns of the paper so that he can tutor his students suitably the next year. “Teaching is a passion and I gave up my corporate job in order that I have the flexibility to do other things in life,” serial exam giver and Director, Quoin Educational Sols Pvt. Ltd. Patrick D’Souza said.
Having stood 4th in the September CMAT 2012, he shares his experience with those eagerly preparing for the February CMAT.
This is an interview with him, focusing on the last minute preparation for the CMAT exam.
- Question: How important is it to solve papers in these last few days?
 Patrick Sir: It is important to solve mocks as it gives you the understanding of the pattern better and it helps you get familiar worth different types of sums that could come in the exam. It helps you to refine your strategy.

- Question: How many papers to solve in the last few days?
Patrick Sir: Solve one paper a day except on the last, On the last day, take rest.
- Question: Should papers or mocks be solved online or offline?
 Patrick Sir: Solve papers online as it gives a better picture of your performance. Solving offline papers are easy and people tend to perform better as compared to online papers.
- Question: One day before the exam what should students do?
 Patrick Sir: Just relax and take rest. The least you can do is go through the previous mocks that you have solved and see the mistakes you have done so you don’t repeat them in the exam.
- Question: How to prepare for the General Awareness Section?
 Patrick Sir: The last few days don’t focus too much on GK. Do a little bit, brush up on what you have prepared. Try to focus on areas where you think you can improve.
- Question: How many questions should be attempted in the paper?
 Patrick Sir: Ideally all. Regarding guessing answers, try doing it in the mocks and analyse it separately. See whether you get positive marks. If you do, then you can make random guesses in the exam. Based on probability for every four questions you guess, you should get positive one mark. But everything may not work on probability, so try it out and see first in the mocks.
- Question: How many marks should be targeted to make it to a decent college?
 Patrick Sir: Atleast 250 plus.
- Question: What do you think the cut off for JBIMS will be?
 Patrick Sir: For JBIMS, Maharashtra students it will be 290 plus.
- Question: How different will the papers be on different days? Will the paper be easy on the first day and difficult on the last day?
 Patrick Sir: The exam body will try to keep a uniform paper across days. Students will find papers easy or difficult depending on his preparation.
