An Interview with Dhawal Jain, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper, Jai Hind College (83.33%)
- Tell us more about yourself.
Hi, I am dhawal jain from Jai hind college. I am a very chilled out person and don’t take stress for small small matters. Love to face life as it comes and always like to be on the edge. I love to do ‘smardwork’ I.e smart work + hardwork
- Were you expecting to top in the exams? To whom would you credit this success to?
I would like credit my success to our co-ordinator Dr.Rakhi Sharma and various other faculties at my college. Apart from them I would like to thank Mr. Nimish Thakur , Mr. Vinay Pandit, Prakash and Deepak fulwadya. It wouldn’t have been possible without their guidance. At the end I would like to thank my family because they never forced me to study all the time and were very understanding.
- Did you prepare religiously from day One or A few weeks before the exams?
Honestly speaking, I enjoyed each and every day of college. I was one of the back benchers and never used to carry a note book to any of the lectures. Teachers used to catch me for sleeping in their class. I never started to prepare from day one.
I had just two finance subjects sorted because I had tuitions, other subjects I studied just one day before the exams. One thing which helped me was appearing for mid terms and college prelims because that gave me an idea what’s the portion and all for all the subjects and what needs to be studied.Â
The whole semester I just used to analyze the subjects and their pattern of importance never really studied though. So I would say I studied one day before exam not even a week before. Only two subjects of finance I used to study whatever we used to do in tuition. No studying at home strictly, apart from the day before exams.
- How did you allot time to different subjects?Â
I had no such thing as this. I used to study whatever was taught in tutions and apart from that one month prior I used to teach my colleagues finance subjects, because of this my two subjects were already done.
Other subjects I just studied for the prelims and midterms and straightaway opened the books a day prior to the exams
But I had a strategic plan, I used to see previous year papers and try to figure a pattern of questions asked and would eliminate a lot of unnecessary questions. So basically I would study 60% of the portion by this method and still be prepared for the boards. This method I applied for all the papers apart from finance, and was quite successful in reducing my portion to study.Â
- Can you share some insights on how to crack the subjects before exams?Â
1. Take tuitions for FM and SSF, it requires constant practice. Try to teach others if possibleÂ
2. For all the other subjects – PLANÂ
Go through the previous years papers of each and eliminate all the unwanted questions which aren’t gonna come in the paper. This is actually possible because I myself never studied the full portion and also it eased me during my preparations
3. Easiest subjects are : service sector management and human resource management. But for me all were kind off easy and will be for you all also if you PLAN and MANAGE your time properly
4. Writing style matters a lot : always start the answer with quoted definition( you have to rote learn this, no choice)
Use pointers and underline important lines and write in point format or small paragraphs matter
Give diagrams wherever possible
And very important always conclude your answersÂ
On the whole write smart answers ..even if you know more write what is needed..extra length won’t give you extra marks ..but it will make sure you miss out on other answers.
- Do you think BMS student require coaching classes or is self-study enough? Had you joined any coaching class for a particular subject?
Coaching class is required if you are not good at making yourself study at home or worse case if you can’t pay attention in lectures like me
- Did you participate in college fests or extra-curricular activities? Do you think a BMS student can manage both studies and extra activities?
Yes BMS is a course which is designed to make you multi – task and manage things efficiently. Bookish knowledge will not take you anywhere. If you don’t participate in any festival the whole course is waste then.
BMS teaches you to be efficient even while doing multiple things.
- Did you pursue any additional courses/ internships alongside BMS?
I Also studied for CFA level alongside 5th Semester
- Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
The more you worry about deadlines of ppt’s, hardcopies and assignments, the more it will cause trouble.
College life is to enjoy, learn, make friends, masti with teachers, IV and eventually study by experience.
- Do you think the number of Industrial visits should be increased for BMS Students? Which industries have you visited?
One IV per year is optimum.
I have visited sime darby, Malaysia
Navneet Factory, silvassa
Apart from the industrial visits, we students know what IV is actually :pÂ
Though other subject have projects which will make you visit a company.
- Do you think BMS students are flooded with assignments, projects and internal exams round the clock? What changes would you like to bring in the BMS Curriculum?
Yes, they do but all the flood feeling is only in the 1st year and then one gets used to it.
The only change I would like to see is that to have more of practicality in the course. Make attending festivals and managing them compulsory. Because that’s what teaches you the actual thing. All colleges should implement and support this. I am grateful to be in Jai Hind where we get the best support for co – curricular activities
- What message would you like to give to the next batch of BMS students?
- What are the future plans post BMS?
