On the Significance of Friendship Day (being just after 2 weeks), BMS.co.in Team got in touch with Sudeep Nagarkar, an author of two bestselling novels – Few Things Left Unsaid (2011) and That’s the Way We Met (2012).

And guess what?

His latest book – ‘It Started With a Friend Request’ which is already listed in bestseller lists on various online stores even before its release, has a BMS connection – Aleesha, the female protagonist happens to be a BMS student who is shown studying in Mumbai. The name of the college is portrayed as Nielson College, which we presume to be Wilson College.

His books are inspired from real life incidents. They have been translated into regional languages and continue to top the bestseller charts.

He has a degree in Electronics Engineering from Mumbai University and currently pursuing management studies from Welingkar Institute of Management. He is also a motivational speaker and has given guest lectures in various institutes and organizations. He resides in Mumbai.

  • What inspired you to start writing books?

Wheel of fortune! My Mom use to tell me that when I was very young, our family astrologer once visited us and said that I will write books in the future. I use to laugh at her statement as I never aspired to be a writer. However, a few circumstances in life changed everything. I can say that I am a completely transformed person now. Today when I look back, I think of how my life experiences and facing failure in love made me pen down my stories, leading to another transformation from an engineer to a writer.

  • Do you have any specific writing style?

It doesn’t take me months to think and years to write. There is no secret behind my writing style as such. It’s just that after writing a couple of books based on my own life, I feel that while reading one can connect more to true stories and relate the incidents to their life. So I usually try and stick with the same simple style of writing which is conversational in tone and easily understandable. I have used the same writing style for ‘It Started With a Friend Request’ which happens to be a true story of my friend Akash and his ‘accidental’ girlfriend Aleesha.

  • Do your books have any message which you want readers to grasp?

There is a different message in each book of mine. ‘Few things left unsaid’ showed teenage love and the immature behaviour of the protagonist Aditya which goes on to ruin his relationship. Things could have turned out well between him and Riya if he would have acted a bit more mature and handled his relation in a better way. This gives a message to all teenagers that even in this fast moving world, true love and trust in any relation is still the most prominent factor to lead to a healthy relationship. On the other hand, ‘That’s the way we met’ speaks about sacrifices in a relationship and how it is important to stay positive even in a difficult situation—just like the protagonist who loses his love but still doesn’t walk away. He instead rises in with a hope that his love will return to him one day. ‘It Started With a Friend Request’ explains how an accidental meeting can actually prove to be the turning point of your life and how honesty and loyalty pay you in return. It carries a strong message of true friendship, love, and how one should handle corporate pressures. There is something in the book for everybody.

  • What are your favorite books and why? Favorite films? Favorite music?

‘Not without my daughter’ remains my favourite book till date. It depicts the struggles of a mother for her daughter and how they try to come out of unfavourable circumstances. The story keeps you hooked till the very end. My favourite film keeps changing every year but no film can replace Kabhi haa Kabhi naa. My fav song currently is “Meri Bekarari” which happens to be the theme song of my new book “It Started With a Friend Request”. It’s the first book in India with a theme song embedded in it.

  • What are your current projects?

‘It Started With a Friend Request’ has just released and all the events around the book are currently keeping me busy.

  • Give us three “Good to Know” facts about you. Be creative. Tell us about your job, the inspiration for your writing, any fun details that would enliven your page.

   1. I am a shy person and surprisingly feel more comfortable in the company of women.

   2. I got the Young Achiever’s Award in Mumbai this year even though I feel I didn’t achieve much.

     3. I am crazy for BMW cars and every morning, I keep wishing someone gifts me one of these.

  • Your message to the aspiring writers?

Dare to dream and work smart for it.
