Bollywood is Indian Film Industry based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The term often refered to as the whole Hindi cinema. Bollywood is one of the largest film producer in India. & one of the largest centers of film production in the world.
Bollywood’s first movie was Raja Harishchandra a silent feature film directed by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. By the 1930s the industry was producing more than 200 films per annum. The first Indian sound film was Alam Ara directed by Ardeshir Irani in 1931 which was a huge commercial success at the box office. & in the year 1937 it was Ardeshir Irani directed the first color film of Bollywood i.e. Kisan Kanya.
However the color film did not gain much success until 1950s. Following India’s Independence, the period from late 1940s to 1960s is regarded by film historians as the “Golden Age” of Bollywood where some of the most critically acclaimed films was produced during that time such as Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool, Awara, Shree 420 are to name a few of the films of that golden period.
Some of the most epic films were also made during that time such as Mehboob Khan’s Mother India which was India’s first official entry into the Oscars, Mugal-e-Azam was still now considered as the costliest of all time.
Ever since the social realist film Neecha Nagar won the Grand Prize at the first Cannes Film festival. Hindi cinema were frequently in competition in Cannes Film festival. GuruDutt is regarded as the greatest filmmaker of Asia alongside filmmaker Satyajit Ray.
From 1960s we can say that the modern age cinema came into existence where action movies, romance movies starred actors such as Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra etc. & actresses like Sharmila Tagore,Mumtaz etc where part of the main stream cinema.
Bollywood is getting world recognition and actors like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan started ruling the hearts of the overseas countries as well!
