BELCO’s regional manager of the eastern zone is facing a couple of problems like delayed supply from the factory, inadequate and unreliable information from the headquarters, fall in subordinate confidence, slow moving customer accounts, tough recoveries and lack of any cooperation from the local government. He submitted the detailed report to his bosses at the head office.
BELCO’s marketing director made an inquiry into the problems of all the zones in the country and found that 90% of the problems are common. He met the managing director of the company and convinced him of having a professional information system to support decision-making at all levels.
The managing director called a meeting of all the functional directors and discussed the matter on the information system.
The points made in the meeting were:
1) An information system alone will not make effective decisions.
2) Setting up of a professional information system would be very expensive.
3) Confidentiality of certain strategic decisions will be lost if a transparent information system is installed.
4) Well defined network of an information system will improve employee productivity, loyalty and creativity.
Q.
Design a ‘Decision Support System’ considering the above points. Also consider the scope for mathematical models and computerization in the decision support system.
