An Interview with Shreya Devan, TYBMS Sem 5 Topper, SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Nerul (80.5%)
- Tell us more about yourself.
I am Shreya Devan currently pursuing my bachelors degree from S.I.E.S Nerul. My family is my greatest support system and I love them with all my heart. I love watching Hindi movies and reading novels. I believe in doing everything with passion. Run your own race. Thinking what others think about you is such a waste of time. Instead I feel that what we feel about ourselves is the most important thing.
- Were you expecting to top in the exams? To whom would you credit this success to?
No I hadn’t thought about topping the exams. For me getting decent marks was the only aim. Sometimes it’s important that you concentrate all your energy on the present and not think about the results and that’s what I did. My teachers are the ones I should thank for because they were very helpful and were always there to solve any doubts I had. Also my parents and friends were a huge help to me during the exam time. They were my stress busters!!
- Did you prepare religiously from day One or A few weeks before the exams?
Frankly I didn’t start from the day one of the semester, but every time any internals or assignments were announced I studied those chapters so that when the final exams came these chapters needed to be just revised once. Starting your studies just one or two weeks before the final exams is a very bad idea because one gets stressed out and you will not be able to focus your mind at all. Start studying for 3-4 hours regularly and when exams get nearer increase this time to 5-7 hours.
- How did you allot time to different subjects?
I made a timetable for the last three weeks before the exams and allotted different days for different subjects. I usually studied for 7-8 hours during the holidays. For those subjects which I found hard like special studies in finance and logistics, I kept more days. In the last few days I studied theory subjects because if you study these subjects long before the exams chances are that you will forget some chapters. So it’s better that you study practical subjects first and then go for theory ones like H.R.M and Service sector management.
- Can you share some insights on how to crack the subjects before exams?
Plan your studies well. Make a time table allotting different days for different subjects. I feel that H.R.M. and Service sector were two of the easiest subjects among the lot, because most of the chapters in these two subjects you must have studied in your previous semesters also. And about the practical subjects which were financial management and special studies in finance (which is an optional subject) start practicing daily. But these are also the most scoring subjects so concentrate your efforts more on them. Also logistics is a subject with vast portion so start preparing for it early.
- Do you think BMS student require coaching classes or is self-study enough? Had you joined any coaching class for a particular subject?
I strongly feel that there is no need for any coaching classes. The coaching that college lecturers provide is more than enough to get good marks. I hadn’t joined any coaching classes, so whenever I had any doubts my college lecturers were always there to solve them.
- Did you participate in college fests or extra-curricular activities? Do you think a BMS student can manage both studies and extra activities?
Yes I had participated in many college fests like SIESONS, Sharpshooters, Synergy etc, and it has in no way affected my studies. Your college life is incomplete without these fests and extracurricular activities. You have got only one year left of your college life so enjoy each and every moment of it by participating in these activities.
- Did you pursue any additional courses/ internships alongside BMS?
No I couldn’t go for any internships because I was preparing myself for various M.B.A entrance exams.
- Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
One of the main reasons that students commit suicide is last minute study . You will always think that you will start studying from tomorrow but that tomorrow never comes. Any can get through these last minute studies but not all of us. If you feel that you will forget what you have studied and there is no use of studying way before the exams change this attitude. Atleast make it a habit to solve one or two sums each day from the start of the semester itself as it can help a lot.
My stress busters were my family and friends. During the day I kept some 1 hour break and watched t.v or read novels. Always keep some amount of break. Studying continuously for days can affect your efficiency. Go out with friends once in awhile. When you feel that you can’t take anymore go out and have a walk. When you come back you will have greater energy and concentration for studying.
- Do you think the number of Industrial visits should be increased for BMS Students? Which industries have you visited?
Yes there should be more industrial visits as it is a wonderful medium to increase your practical knowledge. Our college had organized a visit to COCA COLA factory in Goa. We were shown the manufacturing and packaging procedures of Kinley, a coca cola product. Also many other visits were organized to industries like ship building industries and Big Foot museum in Goa.
- Do you think BMS students are flooded with assignments, projects and internal exams round the clock? What changes would you like to bring in the BMS Curriculum?
It wouldn’t be right to say that we are flooded with assignments and internals, but yes I feel that there should be more practical oriented assignments where students are required to visit industries and collect data rather that just collecting the information from internet and copying it down.
- What message would you like to give to the next batch of BMS students?
“With one eye fixed on the destination there is only one left to guide you along the journey”. Often we focus so much on the future that we stop living in the present. DON’T MAKE THAT MISTAKE. This is your last year in college so make it memorable. Juggle studies and extracurricular activities properly so that you don’t have any regrets after your college life gets over.
- What are the future plans post BMS?
I am planning to pursue M.B.A in finance.
