I always have this one thing in mind that “I wish I could understand or know what the other person is actually thinking without their consent.” It would be great to know someone and the things going on in their mind before they can actually tell, it would be much easier. For this, one must know to read one’s body language which is a great way to understand non-verbal communication, where a person’s body postures speaks more than their words. Understanding someone’s body language is not an easy task, it requires careful observation and reasoning behind the actions and behaviors of people. Noticing the signals that people send out with their body language is a useful way to know more about the person just by observing.

Observe to master the skill of understanding people through their body language.

1. Watch the Head movements- if tilted downwards it’s a sign of sympathy. If a person looks downward without smiling it means he is lost in his thoughts and is trying to figure out something. If he looks downwards and smiles it means either he is shy or is being playful or flirtish. Or if he lowers his head it could also mean that he is ashamed or hurt by something or is being respectful. If a person walks with the head held high that means he is proud or confident about himself. Nowadays some people move their head left and right or scratch their head which indicates they are very bored.
2. Check the hands- if you see some people keeping their arms across each other, they may do this out of nervousness closing them to social influence, and it may also indicate that the person is kind of reserved and uncomfortable of the surrounding, while some others may keep it crossed out of their habit. If a person keeps his or her hands crossed and their legs apart that means he or she is confident and the posture indicates toughness. Some rub their hands or nails against each other when they are tensed or also could be to keep them warm. If someone rests their arms behind their neck or head, that means they are open to discussion. If their hands are on their hips, they might be waiting, impatient or just tired.
3. Leg motions- If someone is continuously tapping, shaking their leg; rub their hands on their thighs and even walking fast here and there, means they are tensed, anxious or uncomfortable.
4. Observe the gestures- Exaggerated movements of hands may indicate passion or interest in the subject; it could also mean someone is trying to convince you on a particular topic.

Next time when you meet people, make sure you take a good look at them or observe them for a while, it will help you know more about the person. Observing and understanding through body language is not an easy task but what you need is good observation and skill to understand the reason for each gesture. Keep in mind that each person has their own unique body language so you need to pay special attention to changes in body language rather than the body language itself. Also you need to remember that the frequency of body language depends on person to person, some do it out of habit, some out of some kind of sickness or others may so it generally, so do not put an end to your observation just with a single look, you also need to be careful that you do not offend anyone by continuously staring at them up to down. Glance in such a way that they are not offended and your purpose is fulfilled.
