Fashion Stylist vs Fashion Designer. Are they the same??

Fashion- trend setting garments-accessories-glamorous looks…! Are they the work of fashion stylists or fashion designers? People often confuse fashion stylists with fashion designers. But in reality, are they the same or is there any difference?

In general terms, Fashion Stylist is a person, who selects clothing for editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, concert performances, public appearances made by celebrities or models or other public figures. Normally Stylists are part of a team which works with the Fashion Designer, photographer and make-up artist and together assemble the wardrobe for the particular event or project.

Fashion stylists need to be energetic, open minded and importantly aware of the “LATEST TREND”. They need to have good communication skills too, as they have to work with a team and especially know about Fashion Designers and their work. Fashion designers may be responsible for creating ‘designs’ but a stylist is responsible for creating ‘style’. Their job is not just choosing the dress for the model but also complete the look with the perfect accessories for which they need to have good fashion visual sense. Every person is different and has varying body type. They should have the knowledge of choosing the right colours, patterns and fabric that would suit a person.

Whereas a Fashion Designeris a person who initially sketches his/her idea of the garment and then works towards materializing it by choosing the fabric and playing with a combination of colours. Once they have an initial idea of what they want, they try out different colours, shapes and designs that would suit every person so that each and every one can enjoy the latest fashion trends.  There may be designers who create designs for clothing, footwear or accessories together or some just work on particular line. They normally try to create fashion trends by using their knowledge of cultural surroundings or mixing up art and designs of various culture and background.

So when we look at it like this, we can see that there is just a thin line between Fashion Stylists and Fashion Designers. But what do we care.

Every person is their own stylist, because no one knows us better than ourselves. So just be aware of the surrounding, the trend and create your own fashion statement.
