Name – DR. PRAKASH A. SALVI.

College – D. G. Ruparel College of Arts, Science And Commerce.

Tell us something about yourself

I am Associate Professor & Head of Department of Economics and Business Economics. Research guide from the Department of Economics, University of Mumbai. So far two students have completed their Ph. D. under my guidance.

In Ruparel, BMS started in 2006 and since then I am coordinating the activities of this department.

Tell us something about your college

Ours is the multi-faculty college having arts, commerce, science and now management disciplines. For few science subjects’ viz. physics, chemistry, botany and zoology we have post-graduate courses. Last year NAAC has awarded ‘A’ grade to the college. The college has good campus nearly 11 acre campus in the heart of the city and our management has been taking tremendous efforts to improve infrastructure facilities for the students.

When did you join this profession? What inspired you to chose this line?

I joined this college on November 21st, 1983. I joined this profession due to love for this profession.

As a Coordinator, do you also teach any subjects? If yes, which subjects you teach and which you love the most?

No.

How are the roles and responsibilities of a Coordinator different from that of a

faculty? Do you like being a Faculty or a Coordinator? Which helps you to connect

more with students?

Responsibility of a faculty is to teach the given subject and to take efforts to make your subject more interesting for the students and if the students are more bright provide them advance knowledge (information) of the subject so that they will also start loving the subject and possibly go for the research after completion of their post-graduation. On the other hand, the job of the co-ordination is more administrative such as find out good faculty, keep proper coordination among them, give them maximum freedom in teaching within the given framework so that they can give their best. If someone is ignoring his/her responsibilities then give an advise and if he/she is not improving then ultimately change the faculty for the betterment of the students community. Try to provide basic facilities for the students and faculties as per their requirements. Organize industrial visits, guest lectures, encourage faculty and students to organize various events and festivals and so on. Last but not least is to remain as a link between the management of the college and the BMS staff.

And I am enjoying the responsibility given to me by our management.

Tell us something about your college fests/events and extra-curricular activities?

We organize industrial visits to every batch of students –one industrial visit per year. Students also organize “AARAMBH” – an intra-college festival since last three years and possibly it would be organized as ‘inter-college festival from next year provided college management grants the permission and I am optimistic about it.

Students also arrange guest lectures. They organize event called “Virtual Stock Market” to provide insight to college students in general and management students in particular.

We also organize workshop for the students on the subjects like “how to face interviews” and so on.

What is the mission/aim of the college?

“Spread of Light” is the mission of the college and for that the college management has been taking tremendous efforts to give best to the students most of the time free of charge. Budget is not the limit for any activity if that activity is for the betterment of the students.

What are the prospects after BMS?

Generally BMS is a graduate level education in the field of management. It provides basic education which is essential for the decision making at the managerial level. So after BMS students easily get the jobs as compared to graduates in other disciplines. The course is designed in such a manner that after three years degree course students not only get a degree but their overall personality also develops. They are in a position to express themselves effectively before the audience. They learn the technique how to face the interviews and so on. So if they want they can get the job easily in the job market or if they want to do post graduation in management this education help them a lot.

What message would you like to give to BMS students?

This is a good course for the students who want to be in management in the corporate world.
