I’m Just an ordinary BMS guy who loves to travel, and probably regular only at our college’s MMS library. 🙂
Tell us about your college
Pillai’s, is a full-fledged Bachelors and Masters Degree College with over two thousand five hundred students on its roll and ten disciplines. It’s a huge college with great infrastructure; that means one may have huge friends circle with utmost diversity of backgrounds and feel good atmosphere over there.
When did you join BMS? Which year you are in?
After completing my 12th, I joined for BMS in July 2008.
What inspired you to choose BMS and not any other course?
As I choose commerce after 10th, I was sure about pursuing a professional management or economics degree and then finally opted for BMS as my cousin insisted about the possible benefits.
According to you, what is BMS all about?
BMS is all about learning half the concepts, reading business papers/magazines and cracking case studies to a greater extent while ensuring one haven’t missed all the fun during his college days.
As a BMS student, what changes would you like to bring in management education?
To be frank and humble, I’m neither a management guru nor an educational reformist but as a victim of the syllabus; it would have been much better if we could do something more in practical than mere theories.
Tell us something about Rhythm of Nation
Well, Rhythm Of Nation (RON) is a unique youth led organization that acts to keep & inculcate service mentality among youth by various activities, so that they are trained for the future nation & thus to serve humanity. I believe youth can be at the forefront of things making a difference.
What inspired to start this NGO?
Being a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya student, my education 6th-12th was funded by central government (more like a Scholarship). It was citizen’s money which provided me quality education and I believe it’s my responsibility to give something back to society.
Being a BMS student and a teen entrepreneur, what kind of challenges did you face while starting RON?
Being a BMS student was the best thing, in case it enabled me to visualize a fully functional organization from almost nothing. Apart from funds, the biggest challenge to any startup is to have right people to support and work towards its vision. For RON, we have the brightest minds, fresh ideas and energetic youth working towards accomplishing the same.
How do you feel when your RON is being selected in Tata NEN Student Entrepreneur Awards?
It’s great that our team work is being recognized, whole credit goes to our volunteers who carried out it from the brainstorming sessions to making an underprivileged student a computer literate, and for all our campaigns.
Don’t you think it is a proud moment for you since you are the only BMS student facing tough competition from the ex-IITs and IIMs? Share something with your BMS buddies to make them proud of doing BMS?
Yes, many of the competitors are from pioneer institutions or pursuing their Masters. So it’s a great feeling to be in for such a competition. BMS have got almost everything to equip an entrepreneur. Everything we learn in college is pure ‘no-nonsense’.
According to you, what is management all about?
Management is all about being a good team player, networking and constantly updating oneself in order to deliver the best.
Your views on today’s Corporate/Business World?
It’s nice to see more firms going for corporate Social Responsibility and sustainable development. RON being a nonprofit organization is looking forward to partner with like minded organizations and we believe such ventures can bring a synergy, thus to influence the system.
What would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs/BMS students who want to start a new business/setup an NGO?
Take initiative, have a systematic opportunity study, brainstorm, welcome advices and criticisms, network with like minded people and don’t be too early to launch until your base is built.
Who in your life has influenced the most?
My parents, they mentored and supported me throughout. Captain G. R. Gopinath influenced me as an entrepreneur.
Is doing MBA after BMS in your mind? Do you think it is required or feel BMS itself is equivalent to an MBA?
Yes, will do after probably 2-3 years work experience in an organization. BMS textbooks are only a nutshell of MBA as I could find it in our MMS library and one should go for higher studies.
What are your future plans with RON?
Our project codenamed as ‘LIFE’ will be a breakthrough solution addressing a major problem faced by Indian citizens.
