Objectives of Packaging:
1) Increases customer service
2) Decreases overall cost
3) Facilitate easy handling
4) Positive impact on layout and design and overall increase in warehousing productivity.
UNITIZATION:
1) PALLETISATION
2) CONTAINERIZATION
3) RORO
4) LASH
Unitizing Lead to:
1) Unitizing leads economy due to movement of large units instead of small units.
2) It leads to Safety because the goods are protected by two or three layers of packaging.
Palletisation / Pallets for Unitization:
A pallet (sometimes called a skid) is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, pallet jack, front loader or other jacking device.
CONTAINERIZATION:
Advantages of container as a packaging unit
1) Reduction in loss, pilferage and damage of goods since the goods are inside the container.
2) Reduction in paper work.
3) Expedites door to door pick up and delivery.
Roll-on / roll-off (RORO or ro-ro):-
1) Ro-Ro stands for Roll On-Roll Off.
2) It is a method of combining a package into a unit.
LASH:-
1) LASH stands for Lighter Aboard a Ship
2) LASH is a method used for carrying the cargo from the shallow water ports to the ship/ vessel.
Kitting:-
Kitting is a process in which individually separate but related items are grouped, packaged and supplied together as one unit.
INLAND CONTAINER DEPOTS (ICDs) :-
It’s common facility made available by the government for temporary stage of import or export cargos and empty containers. They are under customs control and require customs formalities for home use, warehousing, re-export, etc. can be completed at such depots. It acts as a dry port.
