My First Day of BMS College
– Aamir Munshi (H. R. College of Commerce and Economics)
Walking through the gates of India’s highest NAAC rated college, with a score of 3.72 on a scale of 4, you know what to expect in the upcoming three years. It wasn’t much of a shock for me of what to expect. Viral Marketing had done a great job in publicizing H. R. College of Commerce and Economics.
What I thought of as college environment was those classrooms they showed in 3 Idiots – high rise benches with latest technology equipped classrooms. But nevertheless, I wasn’t disappointed. We were on the 2nd floor and let me put it this way – the most spacious of the classrooms the college provided.
I did know a few people before the first day. We were together in the same junior college before. This created a greater sense of relief within me. I felt I knew someone. But who knew I’d make new friends, whom I’d cherish for a lifetime.
H. R. BMS offers a wide mix of students. Some students sat alone while some others were already seen mingling with other classmates. Upon interaction with my batch mates, I saw we had students from across all boards such as the HSC, ISC, CBSE and the also apparently the “elite” IB board. You may feel they are arrogant, but on closer looks you see they aren’t bad at all.
And just in the middle of little talk, our first lecturer came in. She taught us Principles of Management. After a round of informal introductions, stood up this girl, whose name was Shoumi Mittra. She spoke in a typical American accent, and it did seem weird in the first instant. And like a typical Indian student, we started giggling at her, and showed our immaturity. We found it funny, for no definite reason indeed. It was later that I found out that she was an outstation student and had studied at New York all her life.
There was another guy named Vidhan Bansal. He was an IB student from Chtrabhuj Narsee Memorial School. He scored a 44 at the IB and was a world topper in economics. A perfectly groomed student, he gave me a feeling that competition is going to be tough out here.
And suddenly I hear this huge hustle-bustle outside class. A large group of students were waiting outside to make an announcement. And just as the lecture got over, they came rushing in. Yes, it was H. R. Fest that was coming up in a week’s time. And we being the fresh face of H. R. BMS had to gear up for the same.
Within no time our seniors came to class and decided to appoint the ACL’s (Assistant Contingent Leaders) for H. R. Fest. And who could have got appointed as the ACL? None other than me. It was the first hands-on experience that I got in managing people. And strongly, that was my first learning from the BMS program. It gave me exposure right from people who did not do work at all to people who were highly active and wanted to showcase their talents.
The first day was indeed a terrific one – mingling with people from different backgrounds and varied interests. Who knew, that at the end of the first year, we would become best buddies of all times – friends without who even a moment to live is difficult to live now.
