Excerpts from an Interview with Harshal Bhamare, MCC BEST STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2013
- Tell us something about yourself
I did my 10th frm Sarswati Secondary School and 12th frm M.H.Jr.Colg Thane. I learned Tabla for 5 years from Shastriya Sangeet Sadhna and also loved Dancing. I did few shows before joining BMS course. I work for Poor kids and differently abled kids. I have my own NGO named “Differencia – Joy of Giving.” I also work for Events (College events and others). I have done Anchoring in 3 shows at PVR cinemas which was for creating awareness about global warming among school children.
Currently, I am pursuing TYBMS from Mulund College of Commerce. I can proudly say that my college and teaching staff is the best for BMS. MCC has given me more than what I had expected. MCC BMS has great share in moulding personality. “Harshal before BMS and Harshal after BMS is totally different. I have lots of favorite memories in college but out of that “To receive the Award for Best Student of the Year” was most favorite memory. Anyone in the college will usually see me in lectures or in staff-rooms discussing stuff with teachers. My teachers have helped me at every crucial time in my life. Even during managing events in the college, they always supported me and so my studies also was not affected.
- Were you expecting to get the “BEST STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2013” Award?
When I entered MCC BMS, I had a long list to do in those 3 years. BEST STUDENT OF THE YEAR was surely not in the list because my First Year in BMS helped me a lot in regaining my confidence. To get honoured by such title from the overall college courses was completely unexpected. I can say that events like Inspira and running an NGO “Differencia” helped me a lot in boosting my confidence.
- You were an Engineering student and then you changed your stream to BMS. Can you tell us why?
My story somewhat resembles to that engineering guy from 3 idiots
After 12th, I wasn’t sure about what to do and all….
So dad suggested me to opt for engineering and as I was having no idea about it.. I said Yes.
But soon after 6 months I realized that this is not my cup of tea.. and I’m not made for this..
I tried convincing my father..but because of  “Khaandaan ki Ijjat“, I had to suffer through engineering.
My dad is having political background and so that “Khaandaan ki Ijaat” used to matter him a lot. Hence, I had to continue with my engineering. In Sem 1 of Engineering, I got KTs in all 6 subjects. After Sem 2, I got 1 year drop. Those 3 years were the most crucial years of my life. My father had torn my Engineering marksheets and I burned my Engineering books in frustration and so on. After 1st year drop, I couldn’t make it to the eligibility of 2nd year Engineering. I got  a drop in the second year as well. 2 Drops in continuation made me lose my confidence and I was feeling very low. Even I couldn’t do a simple thing properly… it was like if you tell me to book online tickets, I wouldn’t do it because I was very stressed out. All my friends and relatives had written off me saying “Harshal Bhamare is a gone case”
I left home for 6 months and I used to stay with my friend at Dadar as room-mate because of family pressure. I was in real depression in my second drop. I was under Psychologist treatment for 6 months and I was suggested to leave Engineering as soon as possible.
The big deal infront of me and my doctor was my Dad. My mom was convinced but my dad was like “NO MEANS NO”. But after lots of efforts, my dad got convinced with one condition.Â
“DO NOT USE MY POLITICAL IMAGE FOR YOUR ADMISSIONS. IF YOU WANT, I WILL HELP YOU OUT IN ENGINEERING. BUT IF YOU WANT TO LEAVE ENGINEERING, THEN YOU HAVE TO DO IT BY YOURSELF.”
Then on Merit basis, I took Admissions in MCC BMS. (I used the term  “Merit” because till date all my admissions were because of my dad’s image and none of them were because of my eligibility.”)
One thing I would like to say to every student is “Do what you love and love what you do. If you think you are at wrong place or even with the wrong person, just take a quick exit from there. Never give up. If not today, then tomorrow you will have your day.”

- You run an NGO and also came up with Intercollegiate Event like Inspira. What qualities are required to manage these activities?Â
Success of any event depends partially on team and partially on leader and the way a leader motivates his team because if team has no motivation to do the thing then leader has to create that interest and spirit in his team. Also he should take care that spirit and confidence should not lead to overconfidence. Very important thing in leadership is to know people around you and You should delegate right task to the right people. The main thing is to get the work done from others. Even if people fight or abuse you, its YOU who have to make your work done from them. While running an NGO, I am completely opposite person and you have to be very polite and calm because in order to handle differently abled kids, you have to be very slow and calm as per their speed and I am not paying to any of our members for working with me, so I have to adjust with their priorities and other reasons. You have to be on your toes during events and have to tactfully handle your personal and professional life.
Â
- Whom do you admire as your role model? And why?
From social point of view, I admire “Sindhu tai Sakpal” the most. Everyone knows what she had been through and still she is doing a great work. From personal point of view, I have no role model because at that time when people read novels, books and search for their role models, I wasted my time in filling ATKT forms and Revaluation forms for Engineering and after that I badly wanted to prove myself and hence, I had no time in finding role model.

-
Name 3 qualities of prime importance that an entrepreneur should possess.
Creativity and risk bearing capacity.
Minute Planning and controlÂ
Proper implementation of that plan and adapt to the changes.
- Share with us the most enjoyable & most embarrassing moment you had experienced on work.
The most enjoyable moment was during my first event of Differencia. It was when I had invited TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation) School kids in our college auditorium and also next day we had invited differently abled kids from Jidd Special School in Thane. It was such a great moment for me because I saw many people cried due to emotional outburst and that time everyone realised that how lucky they are and many people came and personally thanked me for making this happen.
- Today, we often come across students committing suicide out of failure, depression or tension of exams. What do you have to say about this? Did you use any special techniques for stress management?
Suicides is a very serious problem. I even had thought of such practices during my Engineering times but never tried it. For this we cannot only blame the Indian education system but also family pressure plays a role. The inability of parents to understand the capacity and skills of children may also leads to frustration.
- Do you think BMS students are flooded with assignments, projects and internal exams round the clock? What changes would you like to bring in the BMS Curriculum?
- What message would you like to give to the next batch of BMS students?
Do what You love and Love what you do. Learn to manage things in proper manner. You are BMS student. Try to be a Jack of all trades and Master of none because there is no task where you will say “No, that’s not my task.”
BMS.co.in is a great platform for all BMS students to share ideas and solve doubts. Kudos! 🙂
