Image isn’t everything. But it is definitely an entity that can make or break a first impression, especially at interviews, meetings or business parties. At this point in your life, you are very much accustomed to wearing skinny tops, sweat shirts, denims and loose pyjamas, nose-rings and flip-flops. But as a young adult, if you are working, such attire is not for the workplace. You need to put together a wardrobe that makes you feel comfortable, suits your body type and empowers you. Here are some to enhance your appearance at workplace.
Saris and Style:
Cotton saris no doubt symbolize timeless style. You must have some in your wardrobe and don’t be inhibited when it comes to experimenting with bright colors like reds, peacock blues and emerald greens. Sari accentuates a woman’s figure and gives the best workplace attire combo. For example, many airlines have their air hostess wearing elegant saris while on flights.
Beyond the traditional Sari:
Try teaming flat front trousers with a three-fourth length top. If you like cotton then you could invest in some bright coloured cotton wear which could include wrap around skirts and shirts (with smaller prints). Multifunctional jacket suits are also handy.  Being seen as “professional” doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a suit – but will entail some kind of tailoring, so that could be a jacket, smart dress, tailored trousers or pencil skirt. 5 star or 7star hotels housekeeping women are dressed this way, many a times.
Look chic with an Indo-western fusion ensemble:
You can match a short kurta with pyjama pants and instead of a conventional dupatta, you can throw a stole or a scarf around your neck. Experiment with necklines, buttons and materials. Fusion wear is more comfortable to wear, as against the cumbersome traditional Indian dresses, which is why it is being largely preferred by the working class. This style is accepted by all kind of working women, from freshers to experienced employees in an organization. This fusion is used as routine wear too.
Multi-purpose wear for business and pleasure:
If you have to rush to a party after work, plan ahead. Transform office wear into elegant eveningwear, by accessorizing with a set of diamond earrings, a silk scarf, and a pair of heels or even a string of pearls. This amalgamation of elements from the Indian and Western cultures is found in accessories as well, especially in case of jewellery. In case it’s Indian attire then put away your dupatta and don a stole or a scarf instead. They are the perfect blend of elements from both Indian and Western cultures, balancing both, i.e. neither too Americanised nor too ethnically Indian.
Add some Colour:
If you’re bored of black, navy blue and grey, you can be adventurous with colours without appearing too loud. Reds, rusts, maroons, darker shades of greens and blues are some good colours to choose from.
So how can you inject some brightness into your working wardrobe without looking too desperate, attention-seeking or unprofessional? By adhering to the simple rule, less is more. Ultimately you need to create your own style that will go with the kind of work you do. But above all, it’s important to dress to suit your personality and feel comfortable in what you’re wearing.
