Ganesha Sankashti Chaturthi falls on 20th March 2014, Thursday.
The full moon during Krishna Paksha is known as Sankashti Chaturthi and fasting is done every month on this day. Sankashti Chaturthi fast is mostly observed in Western and Southern India i.e. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. It is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Devotees break the fast at night after having darshan of the moon preceded by prayers to Lord Ganesha. Sankashti means deliverance during troubled times and fasting is believed to reduce the problems. On Chaturthi day, ‘Sankashta Ganapathi Pooja’ prayer is performed which has 13 Vratha (strict fast) kathas – one for each month.
