Within 10 months of existence, Amazon, the largest online retailer of several categories, including books, music, video games, toys, home and kitchen appliances, bags, luggage and fashion jewellery has overtaken India’s e-commerce portals like Flipkart and Snapdeal in the Indian market. Flipkart offers 10 million products and Snapdeal offers 4 million products whereas Amazon India has quietly and quickly grown and offers 15 million products.
Amazon had debuted in India with local brand Junglee.com in February 2012 and launched its own digital marketplace in June 2013.
It started with just 2 categories and now the total selection stands at over 20 categories.
Flipkart has already hit the $1 billion revenue mark, Snapdeal is expecting $1 billion sales this year. Amazon India would enter the $1 billion club in the next 12-18 months.
Amazon has 2 centres i.e. in Bhiwandi (on the outskirts of Mumbai) and in Bangalore to extend its reach and delivery speeds.
On 2nd April, Amazon has also launched a Fire TV i.e. a smart box connecting to various web video services and offer access to Netflix, Prime Instant Video and Hulu etc for US consumers. This gadget will cost $99 and can download videos through services like iTunes, Amazon Instant Video etc. Fire TV looks similar to Apple TV and Roku’s streaming box but it has few unique features like a microphone in which a user can speak the name of the show he wants to watch and the TV will switch to that show. It allows parents to create different viewing profiles for upto 4 children and can also stream music from Pandora and TuneIN radio.
Fire TV is powered by a quad-core processor running at 1.7GHz. It has 2GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. It weighs 281 grams.
