Well people across all nationalities have their own brand of mania’s and do their own blooper’, so I thought why not start up by talking about things we Indian’s tend to lose focus from.
By writing this post I do not mean to criticize the Indian traveler because hey, we have a huge breed of seasoned travelers who could give the firangs a run for their dollars! I would prefer it if you can call it an eye-opener and a super helpful handy guide before you hop on to take your first trip abroad!
So here goes:
1. The Great Indian Baggage attack!
Indians cannot leave without oodles and oodles of baggage with them, but they do tend to forget that all air-carriers have weight limitations and you will have to pay duty in case you over exceed the limit.
2. Bargaining at air ports is truly so… not happening!
I wouldn’t have believed it myself, had I not seen it happening right in front of me. Being cost conscious is healthy but lugging in extra baggage and bargaining about the extra duty to be paid is the pits.
3. Giving your co-passenger the feeling you swallowed a microphone for dinner!
Yes, I ruefully accept we scream the loudest on airports and create a ruckus at every sightseeing stop! Please consciously keep the volume in check.
4. Black knees and the Indian shorts story!
Ladies we know that you have abroad for your vacation and you have complete freedom to wear a lot of little clothes which you couldn’t wear back home, but do keep in mind dirty knees and dirty elbows definitely take away from whatever sultry appeal you plan to project.
5. You DO NOT go abroad because you want to experience different hotel rooms and shopping malls!
Travelling, adventure, sightseeing are all very much things to do on a trip abroad. Just sitting cooked up inside the hotel room or visiting an overpriced shopping mall is not what travel is all about. Don’t feel shy or ashamed of your pronunciation of English or out of comfort zone while talking to the locals, you are a tourist after all!
6. Going off the set travel routine is the in-thing.
For an Indian traveler abroad the agenda usually is to cover as many places the travel agent has suggested or the number of places Pintu ki nanand ki taiji recommended when she had been there for her 2nd honeymoon. Don’t do that! Do your own research and find out places that are not a part of the usual tourist sightseeing list. Actually explore the new places you have been to.
7. Hunting for an Indian restraunt is the biggest sin you ever committed.
Except for the fact that you have senior citizens or very small kids, going all the way to Europe or Australia and eating paneer makhni or dum aloo is the biggest mistake you would ever make! Experience the country through its cuisine, take help of locals or the internet, it really isn’t that difficult.
A few tiny know-how’s and the novice Indian traveler is ready to take flight!
