Rahul Dev Burman also known R. D. Burman or Pancham da is an Indian film score composer, who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film Industry. In his career he has composed musical score for more than 300 movies. And is considered as the most influential music director of India even after his death, his evergreen music is still alive & is source of bread & butter to the many RJ’s.
Pancham da was born on 27 June 1939, Kolkata to the Bollywood composer-singer Sachin Dev Burman & his lyricist wife Meera Dev Burman. He received his earlier education at St. Xavier’s School, Kolkata. As his father was a great composer, so from childhood only he has a great interest in music. In fact he composed his first song at the age of nine, Aye meri topi ke aa. The most famous song “Sar jot era chakraaye” was composed by him when he was a child. In Mumbai he was trained by UstadAli Akbar Khan & Samta Prasad. He also considered Salil Chowdhury as his guru.
In 1959 he was signed as the music director for the film Raaz but the film was shelved. So his first release was Chhote Nawab in 1961. But his first movie as a film director was Teesri manzil in 1966 & the music of the film was well appreciated. After that he had composed for many successful films & many of his songs are still remembered & sung even today such as Mere Sapno Ki Rani, Kora Kagaz tha ye mann mera. He became highly popular with the Kishore Kumar songs in Rajesh Khanna movies like Kati patang, Aradhana etc.
His music has started a new trend in Bollywood & setup the new benchmark for the music directors. It is believed that his music has started the disco songs & other type of songs. He is dead now but his music is still alive & still bring vibrations to one’s heart. He will also going to be remember for his unique style of composition of music.
