We are living in the INTERNET ERA. Social networking is the new in-thing that is probably used by almost everyone nowadays as it is the latest and the greatest way to interact with people around the world. The main purpose of social networking sites is to promote communication and interaction among people beyond national, cultural and religious boundaries which is otherwise difficult. However, this type of technology might be of less use and more of misuse, doing more harm than good for the society.
Social networking has a tremendous impact in the society; it is entering our lives and changing our ways of communicating and interacting with our fellow being in our daily life. Rise of many social networking websites and mobile apps like Facebook, Twitter and even Whatsapp are almost replacing our traditional methods of communicating with people face to face or through phone calls.
We spend most of our time updating statuses, uploading pictures and videos, downloading songs and movies, chatting and surfing online. Anything and everything is put up online in order to be recognized and made known to the world regarding what we do, our likes, dislikes and also our personal information which are seen less in our personal diaries and more on the internet.
Social networking is become our obsession, 24×7 our fingers are glued to our cell phones and computers and what are we doing, surfing on Facebook and Whatsapp. We can’t stop ourselves from updating something, checking out people and their statuses, pictures, commenting and liking. Social networking is become our Addiction. The addiction is so intense that we almost forget the world around us, chat while walking on the road, while eating food and also in the loo, hopefully we can’t use our phone while having bath otherwise we won’t even hesitate to do that. The craziness is so much that we at times chat among people within our house. The popularity of these social networking has increased so much that anything written is like a big deal. The comments received on pictures on Facebook mean more to them than that said. It is believed that more comments and likes mean more popularity among people. So in order to impress and receive appreciation from others pictures are put on purpose as per what others may wish to see like maybe drinking, smoking, parting and having fun. Words like ‘like’ ‘awesome’ ‘cool’ is all what people want to see for their pictures.
Although social networking has many benefits that are useful and is an effective way for easy and faster interactions, good platform to make new friends, grow connection and keep oneself updated with the world. But in order to keep up to all these things we do not even realise the cost we pay for such an addiction. We are missing out on some of the most important things like our friends and family, our privacy by letting the world know everything that you do, losing ourselves to live up to others expectations constantly trying to impress others, no human interaction and building bonds, keeping ourselves glued to our cell phones and ignoring everyone around us, living in isolated socially awkward world, making lives more materialistic, getting caught up into various internet related problems like online harassment and cyber bulling.
This is not healthy for our living. We humans are social animals are socializing and interacting is the need for our survival, but not entirely through the internet. Give more of your time to your real friends and family rather than those online who are more strangers than friends, why care and create connections with strangers who just fake out to be your friend. Communicate with each other not on websites but in persons and make real friends. Social networking should be used only as a tool, don’t make it a major part of your life. Social networking is becoming a problem and we must eliminate its overuse for our benefit.
