Amrish Puri is an Indian theatre artist, a film actor from Bollywood. He has played many different characters but is remembered for his iconic negative roles in Indian film industry as well as many other Indian as well as International film industries. He is most remembered for his role of Mogambo in Bollywood film Mr. India & in Hollywood for his role as Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones & the temple of Doom.
He was born on 22 June 1932 in Lahore, Punjab he was third to the children of four by his parents. He later moved to Shimla & completed his graduation from B.M. College, Himachal Pradesh. Amrish Puri came to Bombay in the footsteps of his elder brothers, who were already established actors known for playing negative roles.
He failed in his first screened & this made him to join Prithvi Theatre, in plays written by Satyadev Dubey. This theatre work led him to recognition & he soon went on to work with in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Hollywood, Punjabi, Malayalam, Telugu & Tamil films. He played many iconic negative character but is still remembered for his role as Mogambo in Mr. India & as the main antagonist Mola Ram in Indiana Jones & the temple of the doom. Spielberg often said in interviews that “Amrish is my favorite villain- the best the world has ever produced & ever will”.
He died on 12 January 2005, due to cerebral hemorrhage. But he is still alive in the characters he had played & will always be dangerous & most iconic villain of Indian cinema.
