Vocabulary is a part of your personality, after your physical presentation the next step you need is to communicate effectively and that is the place where your vocabulary comes in.
For those who may ask why language teaching places such stress on this area (vocabulary). Good vocabulary helps not only in improved performance in the VA section in competitive exams but also in greater enjoyment of the language and in effective communication.
As the writer Johnson O’ Conner says- “[Words] are the instrument by means of which men and women grasp the thoughts of others and with which they do much of their own thinking. They are the tools of thoughts.”
Building a better vocabulary can be a pleasurable and profitable if it gets the support of your time and efforts. At least fifteen minutes a day of concentrated study on a regular basis can bring about a rapid and effective improvement in your vocabulary skills. This will, in turn, increase the effectiveness of your spoken or written communications. You will also understand other’s ideas and point of view better.
Many of the words you already know were probably picked up as you come across them while reading, in conversation, perhaps even while watching television and you all don’t even realize that for a very long time because it’s very casual and normal approach.
If you learn only one new word a day, in next three years you would have about a thousand new words in your vocabulary. You would also have gained a lasting habit of learning and self-improvement.
There are no shortcuts to vocabulary improvement. As you learn new words, it will be easier to connect a new word with words you already know, and thus remember the meanings. As learning speed will increase as your vocabulary grows.
People with low vocabulary level don’t enjoy reading. It becomes their task rather than pleasure to read a book because they don’t understand many words and they have to refer the dictionary every time.
People with low vocabulary should start with newspapers and magazines. Normally newspapers are easier than magazines and there are magazines like reader’s digest is easier than any professional magazines. It is important for you to find a thing that you enjoy reading- like some people like love story or some people rather prefer horror or thriller, when you read something that you like, you automatically get the interest of further reading and learning even more.
• Try to avoid just to looking at the photographs, in fact read the content and observe the way it is written or the author has expressed his view
• Use a dictionary, the dictionary should be the book that you use the most at your home. Always place it readily available whenever you need it , while reading a book or doing your homework
• Your dictionary should be more than just giving the meanings, it should also provide you with the pronunciation and the origins of the words, help you with some examples too.
