Kaanum Pongal is the last day of the Pongal festival of Tamil Nadu. “Kaanum” means “to view”.
In few places, this day is also known as Karinaal or Thiruvalluvar Day. It’s a day dedicated to Sun God as without Sun, harvests will not be plentiful. Sugarcane stalks and coconut are offered for sweetness and happiness in life. This day is very similar to Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dhuj where women offer prayers for the well-being of their brothers. Many South Indian people leave food out on banana leaves for birds/crows to take. Few also go to temple to worship and thank god for all good things that are bestowed on them.
