In today’s stressful life, people generally advise to do yoga and meditation in order to attain mental peace. While “meditation” is always made fun of by thinking it to be “taking up sanyasi or going a spiritual way”, research has said that “meditation  helps in increased concentration, decreased anxiety, and a general feeling of happiness.”
Here we list out top 5 myths which people have about starting the practice of meditation:
1) Meditation should be done only in the early morning hours and cannot be practiced in any other hour of the day.
Well, this is actually an excuse for people who don’t get up early during the sunrise time. The real meaning of meditation is “relaxation”. It is the time when you relax your mind and be patient. It should be done entirely at your convenience and doesn’t require a fixed time. It can be done in the morning when you get up or in the late evening or during odd hours of the day. Better choose a time when you know you won’t be disturbed by any or won’t have commitments. And there is no hard and fast rule, that you need to meditate only for 10 mins or 15 mins or 1 hour. Meditate how much you want to and open your eyes only when you feel your mind is calm and content.
2) Meditation can be performed only in yoga classes or groups or holy places and not anywhere else.
This is a myth which people blindly believe that meditation can be practiced only in temples or spiritual places. Meditation is all about being with yourself. You can meditate anywhere where there are quiet and peaceful surroundings. It can be a small room in your home where you are not likely to be disturbed by anyone to make the experience more enjoyable and relaxing.
3) Meditation can be practiced only if you know yogasanas:
This is a very common myth where people believe that after learning yoga, they can practice meditation. Meditation has nothing to do yogasanas. Meditation requires only you to sit in a steady position. You need not sit in any padmasana or other asana. You just have to sit cross-legged either  on a chair or sofa or a mat to have deeper experience of meditation. A posture where the spine is erect and head, neck and shoulders should be relaxed.
4) Meditation is practiced to run away from practical problems and it makes you addicted or weak to face worldly issues.
Meditation is just “being yourself”. It doesn’t hypnotize or make you an addict. Infact, meditation helps you to face problems with a smile. You develop the ability to accept things as they are and it boosts your self-esteem, make you face challenges with great confidence.
5) Meditation practice makes you old or meditation is only for old people.
Meditation is about YOU. It helps you to improve your focus, concentration and feel good about yourself. Meditation is universal and practiced by all age groups who add value to their lives. Meditation is basically to remove the dirt from your mind which makes you stressful. It doesn’t make you grow old faster but infact makes you mature enough to realize and differentiate between the right and wrong.
