Chetana college of commerce and economics, self-financing courses (Bandra) had their 3 day event Shikhar starting on 9th January 2012, Wednesday.
While a part of it was held in the college premises itself, an Open Cricket match was held on the Ovals ground in Churchgate. The event started at around 10 in the morning. The entry fee was Rs. 500 per team. There were about 24 entries of various colleges which showed the fan following for cricket. Each team consisted of 11 + 2 players. The 1st round comprised of 5 overs, 5 balls per inning. As it was the young crowd on the field, the excitement immense. There were people not only from B.M.S.co.in for the coverage of the event but also there was a coverage team from the college itself. Also there were not 1, not 2 but 3 professors from the organising college too, viz. Prof. Omkar Dalvi, Prof., Gyaneshwar and Prof., Kedar Paranjape. There were colleges constantly coming and registering themselves for the game. Not only were the players excited but the organisers as well.
The first match of the first round was played between K.B.S College and Dhanukar College. The captains of the teams were Amol Jethi and Vishwajeet respectively. K.B.S College won the first match by 4 runs. The 2nd match was played between S.I.W.S College and Vidyalankar. S.I.W.S won the toss and elected to field. Vidyalankar made 39 runs in 5 overs. It was such a tough match for S.I.W.S that they lost by just 3 runs. S.I.W.S had tried their best though. Omkar Lad, captain of Vidyalankar mentioned “if you play well you will win for sure but if you don’t you are bound to lose was our motto” and I am happy we managed to work on it well. Later came Tolani College and D.S.I.M.S, where Tolani made their progress to the 2nd round. The first round ended at around 2 in the afternoon. The other colleges who played were Gurunanak College, Tolani College (2 teams of this college were present), S.I.W.S., Vidyalankar College, Espirity College, Chetana PG team, Sydnham College, S.N.G.C, Siddharth, Khalsa, Ruparel College, Gurunanak (GTB), Sanpada College, Habib college, Bhavans, M.D College, Gokhale College, Joshi College, Jhunjhunwala, etc out of which K.B.S College, Tolani College, Gurunanak College (Chembur), Vidyalankar College, S.P.D.T College, S.N.G.C College, Siddharth college, Habib College, M.D College, D.Y Patil and Joshi College managed to make it for the 2nd round.
To make the game a bit more interesting, the second innings consisted of 3 overs – 5 balls each. This indeed increased the excitement and pressure among all the cricketers on the field. “The organisation of the game is very good. The game is getting exciting and we all are really enjoying it a lot” were the words of Nitin, a student representative of Tolani College. Each college was encouraging their respective teams, making the game more exciting. Although the sun was right on top, nothing could reduce the fun, thrill and amusement of anybody. Coming back to the game, K.B.S College, Gurunanak (Chembur), S.P.D.T, Gurunanak (GTB), M.D College and Joshi College were successful in making progress to the Quarter finals. The game now had started to get a little more intense. M.D College was directly qualified for the finals by now. The other 2 teams who reached the semi-finals were Shri Narayan Guru College i.e. the S.N.G.C. and S.P.D.T College where S.P.D.T. finally reached the finals where they had to face M.D College. “The situation is getting intense after every passing moment and like all the players and students of other colleges we all are eagerly waiting to know who is the winner of today’s match” were the words of one of the students from the registration counter.
Now were the finals of the game played between M.D College and S.P.D.T College. Finally at about 6.00pm, the results were out. It was S.P.D.T College who made it. “It was a tough match, but more than winning or losing participation matters. We are still happy we made it till here” said one of the students of M.D College. It was a nice match. Though there were a few small problems here and there, it was an extremely exciting day. As they say ‘All is well that ends well’.
