Every year thousands of youth die in our country not by car accidents or diseases but by their own hands. Early in the morning we browse over the newspaper and our heart comes to our mouth when we read news like a 16 year old jumped of the terrace and a 14 year old hanged her to the ceiling fan. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 25 year olds. In a recently survey conducted 30.1% males and 13.7% females in 10th grade said they seriously consider committing suicide. It is an awful situation and we need to think about what is wrong? What makes this 15 and 16 year old who have so much of their life left to live want to die? The pressures of life at our age are difficult that 4,135 teenagers a year should be killing themselves.
90% of suicidal teen said that their parents didn’t understand them. Is it the decreasing significance of family in teenager’s lives that is causing suicidal rates to increase? After a series of traumatic events, normal coping abilities may be pushed over the edge, the result may be suicide. One major reason that the suicide rate among teenagers is so high is that, the teenage years are the period of commotion. New social roles are being learned, new relationships are being developed, bodily changes are occurring and decision about the future are being made during the teenage years. Most teen who commit suicide are in depression. Stress causes most depression. The pressure to succeed, may be to get high grades, get a good job, be accepted into an esteemed college, or to excel, win in sports causes stress.
Another significant factor is teen being neglected by their parents. Most households have two working parents. The parents today are so rarely at home that they spend little or no time talking to their children. In some cases teens may not receive the much needed love, care or attention. Teenagers grow up facing various challenges like unable to satisfy their parent’s expectation which is mostly related to studying and grading more and more, strained relationship, abuse that may have occurred in their lives, they feel failure to themselves which lead to a tragic end, SUICIDE. It is an event when a young one feels desperation and pain just before pulling the trigger or jumping off the bridge. It is a time when everything seems to be topsy and turvy and a person starts to feel empty inside.
Teenage suicide is on the rise at an alarming rate. In this world, each and every one of us is unique. If you are gone, people will miss you. It may seem to be the end to your problems, but it is the beginning to other’s pain. When a teenage commits suicide, he doesn’t realize the pain and agony his parent has to go through that comes from losing a child to suicide. Sadly, suicide or self murder seems like the only solution to the student’s problems. People cannot always see beyond the pain, they just want the pain gone.
Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. One needs more courage to live than to kill oneself. Challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.
