The InterContinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland is all set to be Shanghai’s first “Groundscraper” which is estimated at a cost of $555 million. This grand structure will have 380 rooms within the 19 story building & will also have an exclusive theme park. This benchmark of engineering is being designed by British Engineering group Atkins, a U.K based engineering firm along with the Shimao Porperty Group which believes it can complete the structure & will start operating in 2015.
The hotel will be constructed on the side of the open pit mine, where 16 floors will be underground and the remaining 3 floors will be placed above the ground on the surface of the crater. Below this surface there will be restaurants, spa services, luxury hotel rooms, an sports complex which will include water sports and a 32 feet deep aquarium. The under-water restaurants are going to be placed near the aquarium itself. The area above the ground will be used for the guests to experience extreme sports on the cliff like rock climbing & bungee jumping. The rockface which is a part of the quarry will be covered with a massive 190 feet tall glass curtain wall which will mimic a waterfall right from the top of this structure. This pit served as a quarry since the past 62 years which has been abandoned since 2000. Initially this surrounding land was purchased to build a Wonderland with a theme park which would include other entertainment and hospitality components. Further down when the planning was being carried out it was decided that they would construct a hotel which would cater to all components they were looking out for.
For the construction of this hotel a 100 meter deep pit has been broken on the foot of Shanghai’s Tianma mountain located about 45 kilometers southwest of Shanghai’s city center which is 240 meters long and 160 meters wide. The structure will be developed by Shanghai Shimao Property Group which will be further managed Intercontinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland. A unique feature which lies in the construction of the hotel is that the 20 meters at the bottom will be filled with stagnant rainwater through a well designed drainage system, which the hotel will use for its own personal use. Rough estimations have shown that the tariff should be around Rs 17,600, which is an exorbitant price if compared to the other hotels in the surroundings. This wonderland will be spaced over 4,28,200 square meter which will cost approximately $555million.
On completion it is estimated that the InterContinental Shimao Shanghai Wonderland will be 700 meters lower than the top floor of the world’s highest hotel to be which is also situated in Shanghai, the Shanghai Tower J Hotel. The visionary set by then developer is something extravagant and after commencement of work last month they have been successfully carrying out the construction of this structure which is set to make history. Although expensive this hotel is a must visit for tourists because of its exclusively proposed architecture and infrastructural components lined up over the next 3 years.
